Please remember that the booking date will be well before each event – we are often being asked to pay a non- refundable deposit or in some cases pay the full cost several weeks in advance. Some venues have a limit on the number that can be accommodated so if you want to come, book early to be sure of a place! Apart from the AGM guests are welcome to attend.

Autumn Lunch, Copper Horse, Seamer a booking form is enclosed; please return this to Anne before September 18th. There is a large car park at the hotel. If you are using public transport the 12.15pm Coastliner service 843 from Scarborough railway station arrives in Seamer at 12.25pm. From Leeds/York/ Malton direction the same service stops in the village at 12.20pm. Lunch will be served shortly after 12.30 to give guests time to walk from the bus stop.

Burton Agnes Hall – as the weather in November is difficult to predict and the number visiting last year was small the committee decided that it would be best to make this an informal visit so that people could decide on the day if they wanted to travel to Burton Agnes. New decorations, often sourced from the grounds, are used to dress the hall for Christmas which is open from 11.00am to 4.00pm between November 14th and December 22nd. I will not make a group booking but it is suggested that anyone wanting to visit could meet at the hall at approximately 11.00pm on November 17th and pay the individual entry fee of £7.00 for adults or £6.50 for concessions. A seasonal menu will be on offer for lunch in the café, the gift shop will be open with Christmas decorations and presents available. The Farmers’ Food Store will have seasonal specialities and food hampers and the flower shop will also be open. The EYMS 121 service between Scarborough and Hull stops in Burton Agnes but people travelling by car may be able to offer lifts to others – please let the secretary know if you can offer or would like help with transport.

Christmas Lunch at Fledglings – the menu choice will not be available until after the students return in the Autumn term; information will be sent at a later date.

AGM 2010 – 42 members attended the meeting, with a further 10 people joining the group for lunch; the raffle which was held for the Glauert Fund raised £21.96 after the cost of buying prizes was deducted. Lynne Reed kindly prepared a quiz based on knowledge of Scarborough and the local area, of the 49 sheets which were sold 10 were returned to Lynne; Muriel Flinton who answered 37 questions correctly was the winner of the £10.00 prize. The £39.00 profit has been added to the proceeds from the Autumn Lunch quiz and will be donated to charity.

Cober Hill Lunch - 30 members and guests attended this event; we were able to use the drawing room for the welcome drinks and coffee; the meal was served in main dining room overlooking the gardens and sea, giving everyone chance to appreciate the view. Although some people were unhappy with the venue last year, the general consensus seemed to be that it is a pleasant location offering good value.

Sledmere House – 20 people went on this visit on August 4th, enjoying a very interesting tour of the house and an excellent lunch. The afternoon organ recital in the hall gave everyone chance to relax before exploring the grounds and admiring the beautiful flowers in the walled garden.

Member’s profile - Pamela Elliott (née Thompson) 1947 – 1954

I left SGHS in 1954 and spent two years at Goldsmith’s College in London, training to be a teacher. After qualifying I returned to Scarborough and following a grueling interview in the Town Hall I was approached by Miss Lewis, Headmistress at Falsgrave County Modern Girls’ School to teach PE, Geography and English. Classes for tennis were taken at Oriel Crescent or Stepney Road and the girls had to walk there and back. Swimming in the North Bay outdoor pool began at 9.00am; we met the girls there and were brought back to school by bus at lunch time.

During my time at Falsgrave I married Alan Elliott, a former High School for Boys’ pupil and our first son, Christopher was born in 1962. I left Falsgrave but returned for the last term there before it joined with Central County Modern Girls’ School and became Raincliffe School. Our second son, Timothy was born in 1964 and after two years I returned to supply teaching at Brompton, Raincliffe and Northstead schools before being appointed a remedial teacher at Hinderwell County Primary School. After twenty one years there, giving birth to our daughter, Sarah and working under four different headteachers I took early retirement in 1988.

Since retiring I have been active in the life of Westborough Methodist Church and now with the SGHS Old Girls’ Association where I serve on the committee, as I did while teaching at Falsgrave School. I keep in touch with certain of my school friends, as well as meeting one of my infant teachers, a junior teacher and members of the High School staff. I now serve humbly as President of the Association, which great honour was given to me in 2009.
