  • Glauert Memorial Prize

In recent years this prize has been given to the best female student of A level Mathematics at Scarborough Sixth Form College, who has continued to study the subject at degree level. The prize has not been awarded in the past two years, as there has been no suitable candidate. The suggestion of the committee to award the prize to the best overall student was discussed, Mary Barry and Maureen Ille both opposed this proposal. Other suggestions were:

To give the award to the best female student & remove the requirement to study the subject at degree level

To award two prizes, for the best male & the best female student

To consider increasing the value of the award

Pam Elliot proposed that the prize should be awarded to the best female A level mathematics student who was continuing her studies in mathematics or a related area. The proposal was seconded by Denise Willey & approved by a majority of the members present.

No one at the meeting was able to provide information about the legacy left by Adelaide Alexandra Trail to fund a Glauert Memorial Mathematics Scholarship. Miss Briggs sent information about the awards and a copy of her letter is included below.

    Letter from Miss Briggs 2004

Fund raising – profits from the coffee morning and the BBQ would be added to the Glauert Memorial Prize Fund. The secretary was asked to send a summary of planned events to members. Pam Elliot suggested that members unable to attend could organise an activity with a small group of friends & donate the proceeds to the Fund. Margaret Hunter suggested increasing the cost of the subscription to enable more money to be given to the prize fund.

The treasurer will investigate setting up a facility to accept payment by standing order or direct debit
Muriel Robson proposed that life membership of the association should be £50.00, this was seconded by Olga Tidd and approved by a majority of the members present.
There was concern that the names of members who had not paid the subscription were being removed from the list of contacts too quickly. Those not paying should be reminded that the subscription was due.
  • Any other business

Maureen Ille thought that more use could be made of the web site for publicising news of the Association and volunteered to set up a new site to overcome problems with the existing one.

The meeting agreed to accept this offer following a proposal by Sandra Webb, seconded by Pam Elliot.

Anne Mann offered to provide information for the Friends Reunited web site and it was also suggested that contact details for the group should be made available to the library for information on local organisations and to the Red Book (Scarborough Evening News)

The secretary was asked to include the time of meetings on details sent to members.

There being no other business the meeting closed at 12.10.pm
